Campsite Rules & Vision Setting

It's Time for Joy

90 Seconds to Be Inspired

I recently listened to this episode of the Modern Love podcast: Your Worst Dates Ever featuring the host of the Bad Dates podcast. If you want a good laugh, have a listen. There was actually a leadership lesson woven into this hilarious episode: Campsite Rules. The co-hosts riffed on bad dates (a guy actually brought his mother on a date!!!) and instead of just ghosting, they took the time to coach the bad date so they could be better.

Campsite Rules essentially means: to leave the site better than you found it.

So whether that’s a physical space or a human being, I think it’s an important mindset for us to maintain as we embark into 2025.

In coaching conversations lately, many of my clients are considering new jobs. But instead of running away from a situation, they are applying campsite rules to their current company while seeking new opportunities. This is the opposite of bridge burning. It’s a generous bridge building. I don’t see a downside.

Speaking of Campsite Rules, my brilliant friend Connor applied this principle by giving me feedback on my newsletter! He suggested that I collect perspectives from y’all in each edition and share them in the following. So here goes! (Thanks, Connor, for making my campsite better!)

Please take 30 seconds to answer this question and send me an email / text / voice memo with your answer. I’ll anonymously share your stories in the next edition of Time for Joy!

Where have you applied “Campsite Rules” in your personal or professional life? What was the impact?”

90 Seconds 5 Minutes to Learn a Little

This week I’m providing a longer “learn a little” segment in an effort to give you a micro-lesson you can hopefully apply right away. If you just want the template, it’s here!

Many of you are working on your vision, strategic plan and goals for 2025. Let’s begin with the Big V, VISION! Below I explain two tools to use to help you set and cast your vision!

Once you have determined your inputs, you can move on to the next step. Vision mapping.

The goal is to start with the current state, then determine the future state, and then build the bridge between the two. I use this worksheet with teams constantly and receive feedback that it is simple and effective, so give it a whirl! The Vision Map Workbook is here.

In the next two editions of Time for Joy, I’ll continue on this thread sharing how-to’s on strategic planning and goal setting!

Have fun with this, friends!

90 Seconds to Connect

So often, my vision comes from connecting with smart people. This month, our Wendy Road cohort is sharing their toughest business challenge for the year ahead with two special guests, a multi-time CFO and a multi-time CMO, to get advice on how to sell it in.

Remember that vision is not something you hold for yourself, it’s something that must be shared to be understood.

Reach out to your network before communicating your vision. Use the opportunity to connect and share, and I guarantee differing perspectives will make your vision sharper!
